Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt roofing is by far the most widely used roofing material today. A huge variety in colors, shapes, and styles, and its cost-effective attributes, makes it appealing to homeowners and business owners alike. It typically comes in 3 different styles:

    • 3-Tab (least expensive, entry-level)
    • Architectural (3-dimensional look)
    • Premium (more unique style, longer life)

Pros Of
Asphalt Roofing:

    • Least expensive option upfront
    • Available in a wide range of colors and styles
    • Premium-grade shingles can last 30-50 years
    • Lighter weight than many other roofing options
    • Able to mimic the look of other roofing materials like wood or slate
    • Relatively easy to install

Cons Of
Asphalt Roofing:

    • Not as long-lasting as other roofs (like slate, copper, etc.)
    • Not as durable as other materials
    • Not resistant to extreme temperature fluctuations
    • Extreme heat can cause asphalt to crack and lose its color
    • Requires more maintenance than some materials
    • Though you can recycle them, they are not as environmentally friendly

I was very pleased Gutterman Roofing in the recent replacement of my old roof. Affordable and of high quality along with great work and professionalism sold me from start to finish. Special thanks to Terry and his great crew who made a great effort to keep the work area clean and to address the underlying roofing issues as well as around chimney areas. Great finish work. I highly recommend them for your roofing needs.

FAQ

Are asphalt shingles fire-proof?

No, they aren’t. Organic shingles (which are made with waste paper, saturated in asphalt) are more durable but more prone to fire than their counterpart, fiberglass shingles (made with a base layer of glass fiber reinforcing mat). Fiberglass shingles are more common nowadays, and offer much better fire protection (although they still aren’t considered totally fire-proof).

Do you sell organic shingles?

We can definitely get you organic shingles if you decide you want them. However, despite their name, they are actually less environmentally friendly than fiberglass shingles, because they require high asphalt (oil based) content to be waterproof. The term “organic” is simply used to imply that they have a base of natural materials (in this case, paper).
